"Tools learned during first term: Online safety tips"

The social networks are internet platforms that millions of people use to upload photos, create communities on common interests (work, reading, games, friendship, etc), interact with friends and even make new friends or work contacts.
Unfortunately, they are more dangerous than ever. There are men who talk to underaged kids trying  to harm them, physically and/or mentally. Other dangers are hackers and virus. Nor should we forget the thieves, whom we can help if we are not careful about what we post.

In this blog we will show you some safety tips for social networks. Is very important for you to follow all our tips, because the social networks (like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Snapchat or inclusive Whatsapp) can be very dangerous if you don’t take care.
You must to be very careful with what you make publish on the web and follow all the tips to don’t be in danger.
 Here are the tips:

  • Use a secure password and don’t tell it anyone.  For the password you can mix letters with numbers and you can write it with capital letters.
  • Don’t  accept strangers on your account. Share your information only with those you know. Don’t talk to strangers or tell them about your private life.
  • If your account gets hacked you should let your friends know  because the hacker could be talking to them.
  • Be careful when using a shared computer. Log out when you're finished using it and don’t let the browser remember the password.
  • If you can, put your account in private mode. In this way, people that don't follows you, don't have access to your information.
  • Be careful with the content that you publish. Phrases like, "Shoping in Miami" tell thieves that your house is empty and that it's the perfect time to steal.
  • Don’t trust that someone is really who says it is. Hackers are specialists in posing as a friend.
  • Use an alternate email for everything that has to do with service and account notifications, since in case your account is attacked, only those notifications will be accessed, and your personal account will remain safe and hidden.
  • Not to divulge intimate or very important information with a social network, since an error could occur in the service and the same be available for all. The best thing that you can do if you have to communicate something personal is to do it through a more direct method like the phone.
  • Don't be afraid to report someone that you don't know and talks to you.

It is common that, especially young people and children, trust that all people in social networks are who they say they are. Sometimes, for parents is obvious what must not to be done in social networks, and trust that their children will not do it, although there are constantly reported cases of boys and girls who fell silent in the traps of malicious people.

In this video we can see that many parents believe that their children don't do anything wrong, but because they did not control their children, they could have done a lot of damage. That is why it is very important to talk about it in homes and schools. So it's important to talk to trusted people about how to use social media correctly.
If you follow all the tips and take care, you'll never be in danger situations. So, what are you waiting for check that your account is totally sure?
